College Senior Survives Cardiac Arrest Thanks to
Quick-Thinking Campus Police Officers
In a remarkable story of fate and resilience, 21-year-old college senior Jio Rodriguez survived a sudden cardiac arrest while playing basketball at Central Connecticut State University, thanks to the swift actions of campus police officers who were present due to a nearby event. Their immediate CPR and use of an AED revived Jio, who later underwent triple bypass surgery caused by undiagnosed Kawasaki disease. The emotional journey included waking up in the hospital surrounded by family, enduring painful recovery days, and ultimately receiving an implantable defibrillator to safeguard his future.
Determined to reclaim his life, Jio returned to campus, graduated on time, and even participated in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, where he met the officers who saved him. His story is a powerful reminder of the importance of heart health, emergency preparedness, and community support. For the full story and more on Jio’s inspiring recovery, visit the link.

Program Administration Manual: AHA Policies and Procedures
As we get closer to the launch of the 2025 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC on October 22, 2025, we would like to remind everyone that important topics are included in the Program Administration Manual (PAM) related to the successful implementation of the updated products and courses.
In the PAM, there is a section outlining the American Heart Association’s policies and procedures for Training Centers. Among those included, are the following:
- The Training Center (TC) must use the current AHA ECC training materials in its courses and ensure that course participants have the most current course materials for use. For more information, please refer to Course Information section.
- In support of the AHA ECC mission, the TC provides Instructors with resources for obtaining equipment, marketing, or organizational support for courses.
- The TC conducts Instructor Essentials courses and provides updates to its Instructors and Training Sites (TS) with the latest information on AHA courses, science guidelines, policies and procedures, the ECC Beat, and Training Bulletins and Memos. All updates must meet the timing requirements defined with each product or materials release.
- TC policies and procedures for Instructors and administration of TSs cannot contradict AHA guidelines and policies as listed in the PAM.
To find out more, please visit the Training Center Policies and Procedures section listed in the PAM.
