Update from us on ShopCPR ordering:
  • Everyone should have received the latest email forwarded from Kathy Graves on how to set up your account.
  • To link to our organizational account you must:
    • Create your account on ShopCPR first.
    • Email your TSC or Gail that you have created your account and what name your account is under (business name vs. your name vs. your organizations name)
    • Gail will be sending the updates to the AHA weekly to link your account to receive our organizational discount.
  • We will be submitting updates to Kathy (who is now both our TC account rep and our ShopCPR rep) in batches to keep this as streamlined as possible.
  • While we have a list of everyone, we cannot take action on it until you have created your account, thus you must notify us when you do so.
  • Next update will be sent to Kathy on Wednesday 11/20.  Please contact Gail to be included in that update.  The next one after that will be Wednesday 12/4.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
Take care,

Gail Klanchesser, MPA TCC

NEW! Release of First Aid Guidelines and Drowning Focused Update
This has been an exciting week at the AHA with two important science releases! On Tuesday, the American Heart Association and American Academy of Pediatrics released a joint update titled, 2024 American Heart Association and American Academy of Pediatrics Focused Update on Special Circumstances: Resuscitation Following Drowning. This joint update contains the latest guidelines for resuscitation following drowning.

The recommendations are published simultaneously in the flagship, peer-reviewed journals of each organization, Circulation and Pediatrics. The publication in Circulation  provides updated and new recommendations for the resuscitation of both adults and children following drowning, while the publication in Pediatrics focuses on the resuscitation of children following drowning and highlights pediatric literature. The following are links to the release resources:
On Thursday, the AHA published the 2024 American Heart Association and American Red Cross Guidelines for First Aid in its flagship journal, Circulation. These guidelines represent the first comprehensive review of first aid science and treatment recommendations since 2010. The following are links to the release resources:
Additionally, both the 2024 Guidelines for First Aid eBook and the print version of the 2024 Guidelines for First Aid are available for purchase on ShopCPR.Heart.org.
911 dispatcher assistance improved chances of receiving bystander CPR

Preliminary research to be presented at the American Heart Association’s Resuscitation Science Symposium 2024 reveals that in a study of nearly 2,400 cardiac arrest cases in North Carolina, bystander CPR was significantly more likely when emergency dispatchers provided instructions to 911 callers. With telecommunicator assistance, bystander CPR was performed 44% of the time on women and 40% on men, compared to just 9% on women and 11% on men without such guidance. This highlights the critical role of telecommunicators in encouraging prompt action, potentially reducing sex disparities in bystander CPR. The symposium will be held on Nov. 16-17, 2024, at the Hilton Chicago Hotel, showcasing the latest advances in treating cardiopulmonary arrest and traumatic injuries. Learn more here.

Bystander CPR up to 10 minutes after cardiac arrest may protect brain function

An analysis of nearly 200,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases in the U.S. from 2013 to 2022, to be presented at the American Heart Association’s Resuscitation Science Symposium 2024 , found that the sooner a bystander starts CPR, the better the chances of survival and brain protection. People who received CPR within two minutes had 81% higher odds of survival to hospital release and 95% higher odds of favorable neurological outcomes compared to those who did not receive bystander CPR. Without bystander CPR, only 12% survived to hospital release, and over 9% survived without significant brain damage. These findings underscore the importance of timely intervention and could inform public health policies. Learn more here .

2024 ILCOR Consensus on Science with Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR) Now Available
The AHA is excited to announce that the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) has officially released the updated Consensus on Science with Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR). These evidence-based recommendations aim to guide resuscitation practices and improve outcomes for patients worldwide.

The new CoSTR highlights essential updates, including CPR techniques, post-cardiac arrest care, and innovative approaches to resuscitation education. Visit AHA’s flagship journal, Circulation, for the full article.

Reminder: ASLS Instructors Must Claim Their eCards to Receive Instructor ID Number

The AHA is actively working to ensure that ASLS Instructor eCards have their appropriate Instructor ID numbers. It is imperative that ASLS Instructors first claim their eCards via the email they receive in order for AHA to begin its process of manually assigning the Instructor ID number.

After the Instructor claims their ASLS Instructor eCard, it will take approximately 30 days for the Instructor ID number to appear on the eCard. Please note: the ASLS Instructor eCard is still an active, valid card without the Instructor ID number. As a reminder, the Instructor ID number can also be viewed when the Instructor logs into their account on Atlas.

Instructors must register and set up an account on Atlas, AHA’s training and education platform for the AHA Training Network, at atlas.heart.org. When Instructors create an Atlas account, they must use their email that matches the email address tied to their issued cards and align with a Training Center or Site.

For instructions on how to access your eCard in Atlas, please review this helpful guide. If you need assistance with setting up your account on Atlas, please review this job aid that explains how to log into Atlas for the first time.
